"SHUSMO" in Arabic means "what's his name." This ensemble began to take shape in the Fall of 2000. At first, the intent was quite simple: To blend various elements of jazz and Middle Eastern music, and to present them through powerful grooves. Over the years, as the sound of the band began to mature, other elements came into play including Latin rhythms, counterpoint, and spoken word.
Today, every member brings their own background to add flavor to the compositions, and the result is far beyond what the original goals were. This New York City based band has recorded music for the film "West Bank-Brooklyn," and theme music for WBAI's radio show "Fen Meshnoon with Dean and Maysoon."
Since releasing their first album "One" in February 2005, they have performed at a number of festivals in the US and internationally including The Jerusalem Festival (Jerusalem, Palestine), Sounds of the City (Newark, NJ), Atlantic Antic (Brooklyn, NY), NextNext Series at BAM Cafe (Brooklyn Academy of Music), and Festival Du Monde Arabe (Montréal). Other venues include New York and Columbia Universities, and Joe's Pub.

About the Instructor:
Born in Tehran, Iran in 1973, Negar Booban studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Tehran, earning an MA in Architecture with her design of Tehran's future Conservatory. Focusing on special acoustic design, she concurrently studied music and musical acoustics, sparking her interest in the principles of Persian music of the past. Negar mastered the 'oud and Persian radif (a collection of old melodies handed down by masters to students throughout the generations) and since 1994 has worked with numerous ensembles of Persian classical music. She has given over one hundred performances, including the Fajr and Yas Music Festivals, and made several recordings. Negar is also deeply involved with the art of improvisation, both in traditional "Dastgah" (Persian musical modal system) and in free improvisation on themes of various origins and modes.
Her solo oud album, Payaapey ("Continuous"), was released in August 2008. She holds a Ph.D in Art Research, her dissertation on a comparative study of rhythm in Persian music and Persian language, and is currently an instructor of 'oud at the Tehran Conservatory of Music.
